Nowshera Sarai is a unique sarai located in
Nowshera of
Rajouri District,
Jammu and Kashmir. Nowshera is about 45 km from
Rajouri.
This splendidly set sarai has two enclosures one within the other, the outermost enclosures has double storied bastions at the corners and is crowned by crenellated battlement. It contains a row of alcoves internally and has machicolations. The residential complex has a quadrangle of arched cells facing a common courtyard and lies in south-west corner of the enclosure wall.
The sarai is entered through the grand gateway, which contains a square stone pillar surmounted bay bracket with bendent, located in the middle of western wall. The eastern gateway, facing the river side, is said to have been built by Emperor Akbar. It is now in a dilapidated condition.
Shahi Mosque (opposite to main gateway) and the remains of a Hammam are the nearby attractions.
