Nondi Natakam is a folk play performed in
Tamil Nadu. The word ‘nondi’ means a limped person, while ‘natakam’ means play. This play, also called ‘ottraikkaal,’ originated during the 17 and 18th centuries. It depicts the experiences of a one-legged thief. This play is themed on devotion and forgiveness.
The actor playing the thief in Nondi Natakam folds his one leg at his back, to portray the limping. The thief narrates his story, which includes his falling in love with a dishonorable courtesan, his obtaining salvation through devotion to God and the recovery from his sufferings.
