Niramkaithakotta Temple

An Ancient Temple

Niramkaithakotta Temple, an ancient temple more than a thousand years old, is situated in Vallikkunu at the northern extreme of Malappuram District of Kerala. It is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa and one of the most important Dharma Sastha temples of the Malabar region.

The temple has an underground well, which provides the holy water for use in the temple. The unique quality of this well is that the water in it never dries or overflows. It is believed that the water is from the holy river Ganges. The water in the well never gets sunlight. There is a way to this well from inside the temple, which is used by the priest to take the holy water.

Niramkaithakotta Pattulsavam and Mekkotta Thalappoli are the two main annual festivals celebrated here. Nearby is the famous Mekkotta Bhagavathy Temple on top of a hill.

The temple is about 20 km south of Kozhikode city. Calicut Airport is the nearest airport and the nearest railhead is Kozhikode Railway Station.
