New Palace at Kolhapur

Sahu Chhatrapati Museum

The New Palace, also known as Sahu Chhatrapati Museum, is an impressive structure located in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. This royal palace is partly converted into a museum, which creates an aristocratic ambience.

This Indo Saracenic Style palace was built in 1881. The upstairs of the palace still accommodate members of the maharaja’s family; hence visitors are allowed only in few rooms on the ground floor.

The museum displays a rare collection of paintings and artifacts used by the royal family. Collections include furniture, petit point samplers executed by various queens, old photographs, letters from British Government, coffee tables and lamps made from elephant's feet and ostrich legs.

The palace also has a lush green park, a zoo and a beautiful lake. The museum is open from 11:00 to 13:00 hrs and from 16:00 to 18:00 hrs.

Kolhapur is on the Bangalore-Pune highway. Kolhapur Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
