New Forest




New Forest is situated five km to the west of the Clock Tower in Dehradun. It lies on the Chakrata route in the Dehradun Valley. Created in 1927, it is the campus of the Forest Research Institute and covers an area of 4.45 sq km. Entry to the forest is through Trevor Gate or Kaulagarh Gate.

It stands on extensive grounds amongst fine plantations of many species of forest wealth. There are many varieties of trees, bamboos, shrubs and climbers, which attract different species of birds. New Forest is an ideal spot for bird-watchers, nature lovers and trekkers. The prominent bird watching spots here are the botanical garden surrounded by a canal, pine forests, cane, teak plantations, lawns, nurseries, orchards, Tons River valley forest and mixed forests.

Tons and Nun rivers flow close by. Forest Rest House and Officers Rest House are available.

The Headquarters of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) and Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA) are also located in New Forest. Nearby villages are Bajawala and Masindawala.

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport. The nearest railway station is at Dehradun.
