Nandalal Bose was born in 1883 at
Kharagpur in
Munger District in
Bihar. He was a renowned Bengali painter. Highly influenced by the murals graced on the
Ajanta caves, Bose created paintings of women, village life and scenes depicting Indian mythologies. Among his popular paintings are Gandhari with a Maid, Sati Chitay Arohan and Fresco-Buono painting.
Nandalal had worked as an art-teacher at Santiniketan, run by Rabindranath Tagore. In 1955, Nandalal was honored with Padmabhusan. His paintings are now famous as the Haripura posters.
