Naina Devi Temple is a famous hill temple in
Bilaspur District of
Himachal Pradesh. The legend behind this temple is that
Lord Shiva’s consort
Sati burnt herself in a yagna (sacrifice) to avenge an insult to Lord Shiva. The distraught Shiva picked up her corpse and started his dance of rage. To save the earth from Shiva’s wrath
Lord Vishnu unleashed his Chakra (Discus) and cut Sati’s body into fifty-one pieces. It is believed that Sati’s eyes fell at the spot where this temple is situated and so the temple is called
Naina Devi. The temple celebrates many events including
Navratri, Shravan, Durga Maha Ashtami,
Dusshera and
Diwali.
