Naga Dance is performed during the religious processions in
Puri District of
Orissa. It is a virile and spectacular dance form performed by young and energetic men. The performers are usually seen embellished in a huge head-gear exquisitely garnished with silver ornaments and a false beard almost covering his face.
The dance starts with heroic steps with jerky movements of the shoulders, in alliance with the rhythm provided by the drummers. The dancer sometimes holds a gun. The performer moves at the head of the procession along with the drummers who provide rhythm to his movements.
Though formerly prevailed among the Brahmin community, Naga Dance is now performed by people of other castes as well.
