Muslam Khel is a popular folk dance performed at
Chandor in
South Goa District of
Goa. The literal meaning of ‘muslam’ is ‘pestle’, which refers to the object used for the dance.
Muslam Khel has a long history behind it. This dance came into being during the celebrations marking the victory of the local king over a rival king. Lord Shiva, being the chief deity of this ruling clan, came to be revered in the victory songs. He is praised along with Goddess Durga, his consort. Even though the people of this region got converted to Christianity at a later period, they still continued with their traditions and culture. They still perform this dance, which contains praises of the Hindu deities.
Muslam Khel is performed during the February-March period, in an event marking the victory of the local ruler over the rivals. The dancers don colorful clothes and hold pestles while dancing.
