Munger, the district administrative center of
Munger District, is located on the banks of the
Ganges River.
Also spelt as Monghyr, Munger is believed to have been founded during the Gupta Dynasty. During the revolt against British in 1764, Mir Kasim Ali, a Muslim leader, used Munger as the base.
Munger Fort, built by Mohammedan kings, forms the major attraction. Munger is also the site of famous Satyananda Yoga Ashram, which was developed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati.
A firearm industry, which dates back to the 18th century, and a large cigarette factory are the other highlights. Besides, Munger is popular for its unique gold and silver works.
The cities and towns near Munger are Ballia in the west, Khagaria and Khutia in the north and Dharhara and Jamalpur in the south. Muzaffarpur and Patna are at distances of 84 km and 192 km respectively.
Munger has good road, rail and ferry connections.
