Mumbai Fort, popularly called the Fort or Fort Area, is a bustling commercial and administrative center situated north of
Colaba, in south-central
Mumbai. The place is just a few minutes walk from
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Station.
The Fort area presents a picture of old world charm mixed with the modernity of the contemporary. Eighteenth and nineteenth century Gothic constructions – the erstwhile administrative and commercial structures – intermingled with sky scrappers and multi-storey concrete-blocks provide an interesting sight. The place in-fact derives its name after the long-vanished British fortifications, which once stood around the harbor in the 17th century.
Bombay University, the Bombay High Court, the BMC Building, St Thomas' Cathedral, the stately
Horniman Circle and the marvelous Victoria Terminus talks volumes about its rich Victorian past. Rajabai Tower, Flora Fountain, Mumbai Stock Exchange and Jehangir Art Gallery are located in this part of the city.
Grand Hotel and Residency Hotel are two high end hotels in Fort. Apoorva Restaurant and Sanuk Oriental are some good eateries around.
Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is around 26 km north. Churchgate Railway Station is a km to the south.
