Muktapureeswarar-Payatreeswarar Temple




Muktapureeswarar-Payatreeswarar Temple is situated at Virkudi, near Nannilam, in Tiruvarur District. The presiding deity is Payatreeswarar and the goddess worshipped here is Kayiyankanniammai. This ancient temple was built by Raja Raja Chola II. Inscriptions are preserved in the temple. The Sthala Vriksham (sacred tree) is Sivandimaram and the theertham is Devi Theertham. The festival is in the month of Vaikasi (mid May - mid June) with the annual Bhrammotsavam.
