Mugar Shankh is a small instrument accompaning the
Carnatic music concerts. It is popular in
Tamil Nadu and
Kerala.
During concerts, it is played along with Mridangam and never used alone. It has the shape of a shankh (conch) and produces the sound resembling the same, and hence the name Mugar Shankh.
The 6 cm broad and 15 cm long instrument is made up of metal. It has two parts, an iron or steel rectangular frame and a bow shaped steel part in the center of the frame. The pitch of the music varies with the length of the bow.
