Muga Silk is the costly silk known for its innate golden luster. It is produced mainly in
Assam and the border areas of neighboring north-eastern states and
Coochbehar in
West Bengal.
The silk is formed by the muga silkworms. Sualkuchi sarees and mekhala-chaddars are the traditional items woven out of muga silk. Today designers use muga silk to create more fashionable costumes.
