Mokokchung District of
Nagaland is situated at an altitude of 1,325 m above sea level. The town of
Mokokchung is the headquarters. It is a picturesque town, center of the culture and traditions of the Ao Nagas. It is bordered by
Wokha District in the west,
Tuensang District in the east,
Zunheboto District in the south and the state of
Assam in the north. Mokokchung is 152 km west of
Kohima, 102 km from
Amguri (Assam) and 103 km from Mariani (Assam). There are six distinct hill ranges. The ranges are more or less parallel to each other and run in the south-east direction.
The population is 227,230 spread in an area of 1,615 sq km. The Milak and Tula rivers that flow by Mokokchung are of a scenic interest to the tourist. The footprints of Jina and Etiben (the legendary immortal lovers of the Aos), are found on the rocks in several places on the Ao ranges. Aos being Christians,
Christmas and New Year are celebrated with great enthusiasm. The beautiful village of
Longkhum, surrounded by hills and valleys, is situated 17 km south-west of the town of Mokokchung. The historical villages of Ungma, Langpangkong and Molung are very close to Mokokchung.
