Moirangphi is a native costume of the women in
Manipur. It is a variation of the
saree.
Distinguished by the images of temple tower in the border and dotted patterns on the surface, this cloth is woven in white or similar light shades. This cloth is woven exclusively by the women.
The ‘phi’ from the word ‘moirangphi’ means cloth whereas ‘moirang’ is the name of a village from where it originated. This cloth is related to the tragic love story of two legendary figures Khamba and Thoiba. It is believed that Thoiba had originally weaved this cloth.
