Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, one of the oldest clubs in Asia, was establishment in 1889 to promote the football. Mohun Bagan was the first Indian team to win the IFA Shield (1911).
The club started its function in a bungalow called Mohun Bagan Villa at
Kolkata and as a result got the name Mohun Bagan Athletic Club. In addition to football, the club now focuses in hockey, tennis, badminton, cricket and athletics. It hosts the annual athletics meet with great pomp and show.
A postage stamp had been published by Government of India in 1989 remembering the 1911 victory of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club. This is the only postage stamp in India that has been published for a club.
Mohun Bagan Athletic Club has been chosen among the top 11 clubs by FIFA to form an Elite Task Force for club football.
