Mihir Sen was the first Asian who swam across the English Channel. He was born on November 16, 1930 in
Purulia,
West Bengal. By profession he was a lawyer. Later, he was taken to the field of sports, especially swimming.
Mihir Sen established the records of crossing the English Channel, Palk Strait, followed by Gibralter Dar-E-Daniyal, Wasphorus, and Panama.
In 1959, the government awarded him with
Padmashree for his contribution as a swimmer. He also got
Padmabhushan in 1967. Mihir Sen also earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. He died in 1997.
