Mela Kuti

Mela Kuti is a large fair held at Gharachon in Sangrur District of Punjab. It is celebrated for three days during February-March.

Literally the words ‘Mela and Kuti’ stand for ‘fair and hut’ respectively. As per legend, this fair is associated with Baba Faqiria. Once while he was sitting on a wall, Emperor Shah Jahan happened to pass that way riding on a horse. Baba, with his spiritual powers made the wall to walk along with the Emperor's horse. Surprised at this miracle, the Emperor touched the feet of Baba and gave him 12 bighas of land in village Gharachon. The Baba constructed his kuti there where the people now celebrate a fair in his memory.
