Mayureshwar Vinayak Temple is situated at Moregaon about 50 km from
Pune, en-route to
Aurangabad. The place was once rich in peacocks, hence the name Moresh or Moregaon.
Considered as one of the Ashta Vinayak shrines of Maharashtra, the temple is dedicated to Mayureshwar Vinayak (Lord Ganesh). It is thought that the original idol of the deity was installed by the Lord Brahma. The copper image is believed to have been installed by Pandavas while they were on a pilgrimage to Moregaon.
Fortified with lofty walls, the temple enshrines an east-facing idol of Lord Ganesh flanked by brass image of his consorts Sidhi and Budhi. The presiding deity is armed with a spear and a cobra encircles his head.
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated here amid much pomp and splendor draws a large number of devotees from far and near.
