Listed among the 64 arts in ancient literature, Marpor or Malyutham is a martial art of
Tamil Nadu. This sport is similar to the western wrestling. This art reached its zenith during the
Pallava period. This art used to be taught by persons belonging to the Malliga Chetty community.
In Marpor, the opponents wrestle with each other and attempt to push the other down. This is to be done only according to the prescribed rules. The wrestlers travel far and wide to take part in tournaments. They challenge the local wrestlers and wrestle with them for the sake of name and fame.
