Mao is among the oldest hill stations of
Manipur, half-way between
Dimapur and
Imphal. Situated at an altitude of 1788 m above sea level, it is a frontier township with a check post. Mao lies on the
National Highway 39, about 106 km from Imphal.
Bordering Nagaland, Mao is the homeland of the Mao Naga culture. There is an inspection bungalow, a hundred year old building built by Royal Military Engineers.
