Descendants of
Rajputs, Manganiars is an ethnic group of lower caste in
Thar Desert in west
Rajasthan. Manganiar literally means 'one who begs.'
Previously these converted Muslims used to play before Hindu Jagirdars (land owners) and the kings of western Rajasthan. But now they play for Hindu patrons during births, marriages, rituals and other communal festivities. Also Manganiars performances are seen in Hindu temples. They are rewarded with money and presents. Traditional and semi-classical music is played. Kamaicha, a stringed instrument, is exclusively meant for Manganiars.
Today, a major portion is settled in Jaisalmer and Barmer districts of Rajasthan.
