Devakkuth



Malayikkuth is an art form performed by the people of Malayi sect. The theme of this art form is that seven heavenly nymphs descended on earth to collect flowers, one lost her way and could not join the others when they went back to heaven. A wandering Narada happened to see her and he wanted her to continue in this world itself. The art form is the enactment of the conversation between Narada and the nymph.

Malayikkuth, also known as Devakkuth, is commonly performed in Kannur District at Cherukunnu and Thekkumpadath. It is played by two main characters, Devakanni and Narada. The costumes of Devakanni consist of pleated cloths, dotted dresses and gold and silver ornaments. Narada is dressed in shining silver and other colorful cloths. The drama is performed in front of a lighted lamp. Devakanni enters first, accompanied by other minor characters. Narada enters later and they dance together.
