The Malayalee Club, located at Chetpet in
Chennai, is said to be the first Malayalee association to be formed outside
Kerala. Started in 1897, this club was founded to promote the social, cultural and linguistic needs of Keralites who settled in Chennai.
Club activities include card playing, table tennis, and gym. It organizes monthly cultural programs. One of the main programs is the five-day-long Swathi Thirunal festival celebrated in April. Music and dance programs and competitions are conducted as part of the festival. Two-week-long onam celebrations are also arranged.
The club has a library with a rare collection of books, magazines and journals.
