Situated in the Kulu Valley, Malana Village in
Manikaran is famous for its lush green hills. This village is considered to be the oldest democracy in the world. No interference of the outsiders is entertained here and all disputes of the village are settled between themselves.
According to a legend the village is Greek in origin. It is said that some of the soldiers from Alexander’s army had settled here and these villagers are their descendants. The villagers have strange looks, sharp features, narrow eyes and dark bronze skin. They speak a dialect of their own, not used by anybody else.
Malana’s proximity with the Chanderkhani Pass, the ancient temple of Jamlu and its distinct, social and cultural characteristics attract many visitors to the village. Some basic tourist accommodations are now available in the village.
By road Manikaran is 45 km from Kullu via Bhunter and 85 km from
Manali. The airport is at Bhunter (Kullu) 35 km.
