Mahamastakabhisheka




Mahamastakabhisheka is a Jain festival celebrated once in twelve years at Sravanabelagola . It is the ceremonial bathing of the Gommateshwara Statue with milk.

The festival has been conducted since 981. 1008 consecrated pots of water are used along with unending quantities of milk, sugarcane juice, honey, pastes of saffron and sandalwood. Precious stones and metals as well as flowers and coins are also offered to the Lord. The ceremony lasts for 10 hours.

The next Mahamastabhisheka will be held in February 2006.
