West Bengal is famous for the mats made from the Madur grass. Jute is also used sometimes in various combinations with the grass for making the mat.
The grass is cut, dried and soaked in water to soften it. This softness aids in the weaving. Grass is further split into thinner strands for making articles that are more delicate. The mat is weaved on a loom, with the grass placed lengthwise and the cotton yarn crossing it.
