Madikeri




Madikeri, also known as Mercara, is located 252 km from Bangalore. It is the district headquarters of Kodagu District.

The land is blessed with misty hills and lush green forests. Orange groves, tea and coffee plantations, and undulating streets give Madikeri a picturesque view. Sandalwood and rosewood trees enhance the beauty of Madikeri. The climate is pleasant throughout the year.

The prime attractions in the city are Madikeri Fort, Raja's Seat, Omkareswara Temple and Vijaya Vinayaka Temple.

Nearby places of interests are Harangi Dam, Bhagamandala, Talakaveri, Nisargadhama, Horticulture research center, Abbey Falls, and Iruppu falls. Rajiv Gandhi National Park, and the sanctuaries of Talakaveri, Pushpagiri and Brahmagiri offers a wide variety of fauna.

Keil Poldu in September, Tula sankramana in October, and Huthri (Harvest Festival) in November-December are the main festivals in the city. Local flavors include pandhi, koli and bembia curry, kadumbuttu, noolputtu, votti and coffee. Quality coffee, honey, cardamom and pepper can be purchased here.

The nearest airport is at Mangalore (136 km). The nearby railheads are at Mangalore and Mysore. Madikeri is well linked by road to Bangalore, Mysore, and Mangalore. The best time to visit is from October to April.
