Madhukeshwara Temple

The only remainder of the ancient Kingdom of the Kadambas is the famous Madhukeshwara Temple of Banavasi. The entire life of the town revolves around this temple. Built in stone around 1,500 years ago, it was renovated with additional structures by later dynasties. The presiding deity of Madhukeshwara (Lord Shiva) is a honey colored linga installed during the period of the first king of Kadambas. It also has a seven foot Nandi idol made of a single stone.

This temple displays the architectural styles of different dynasties. The architectural excellence of the Kadambas is revealed in the Nagara Shikhara, and the Sankalpa mandapa in front reveals the influence of the Chalukyan style. The Nritya mandapa (the dancing hall) with exquisite carvings presents the architectural fineness of Hoysala period. The garbh griha is built in a very plain style with minimal carving on the door and the lintel.

Banavasi is on the border of Uttara Kannada District and Shimoga District. Major railhead is at Shimoga, 112 km from Banavasi. It is also accessible by road from Bangalore, about 374 km. Nearest town Sirsi is 18 km away. Goa Airport is at a distance of 220 km.
