Maakaraleeswarar Temple




Situated at Tirumagaral, the famous Maakaraleeswarar Temple is 15 km south of Kanchipuram. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva referred to as Maakaraleeswarar. There is a separate worship place for Goddess Tribhuvaneswari. The temple sanctum is crowned with a gajaprashta vimana. Inscriptions during the period of Chola emperors are seen in the temple. The temple teertham is Agni Theertham. Sage Sambandar is said to have contributed pathigams praising the lord. The annual festival is celebrated during the Tamil month of Maasi (mid February – mid March).

Chennai International Airport and Kanchipuram Railway Station serve Tirumagaral.
