Maa Kali Bhadrakali Temple is located at Bhadrakali, about 8 km to the west of
Handwara in
Kupwara District of northern Kashmir. This temple is on a hilltop in a thick pine forest of Devdars. The presiding deity of the temple is Goddess
Kali.
This is an ancient temple which was damaged due to snowfall and rains. No puja was being performed there after the migration of Kashmiri Pandits. But the local Muslims looked after the temple and repaired it several times. It was recently renovated by the joint efforts of the local populace and has been opened for the devotees.
There is a statue of Bhadrakali which is worshipped on Chaitra Navami, the ninth bright day of Chaitra. This festival is celebrated in the whole of northern India as Rama Navami. People from different parts of the state gather during the festive time.
By road, one can easily reach Bhadrakali from Handwara, 26 km from Sopore. The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi Railway Station. The nearest airport is at Srinagar – the capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
