Lord Ranganathaswamy Temple, located at
Mahimapura in
Bangalore Rural District of
Karnataka, is dedicated to
Lord Vishnu. The deity is referred by the name Ranganathaswamy. He is represented by a mound of Jaggery (unrefined sugar). Other deities enshrined here are
Lord Garuda and Lord Hanumantha.
The temple stands on top of a hillock. About 350 steps lead to the top of the hill. The temple conforms to the Chola style of architecture. The pillars sculpted from stone features exquisite carvings. The carvings depict the numerous forms of Lord Vishnu. The rituals pertaining to the deity is performed only in the morning, owing to the belief that the divine sages visit this temple after sunset. The temple celebrates Janmashtami, Navratri and Narasimha Jayanthi with great pomp and fervor. During the February-March period, a grand chariot procession is held.
Located at the base of the hillock is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The idol of the deity stands 12 feet tall.
