Legend of Bhimeswara Temple

Bhimeswara Temple is 17 km from Kakinada at Draksharama. It is an important place of Shiva worship. Many legends speak of the significance of this place.

The main legend speaks of a great yagna (fire-sacrifice) arranged by a chieftain among celestials named Daksha Prajaapati here. He had invited all gods and goddesses for the event except Lord Shiva. The grudge was that his daughter, Sati, had married Lord Shiva against her father’s wishes. Disregarding Shiva’s warning, Sati attended the yagna where she was insulted by her father. Unable to bear the humiliation, Sati burnt herself in the homa kunda (sacrificial fire). Since she sacrificed herself in the kunda here, no sacrificial yagna or rites are performed on the soil even today. Another legend puts this as one of the places where a piece of the Linga worn by the asura (demon) Tharaka fell when he was killed by Lord Kartikeya.
