Lamayuru Monastery is an ancient Buddhist
gompa, situated in
Lamayuru, about 125 km west of
Leh, in
Jammu and Kashmir. It is the oldest and splendidly set 10th century monastery in
Ladakh. It has an impressive location, situated on an eroded crag, overlooking massive mountains and a drained lake.
Lamayuru Monastery has been destroyed and restored several times over the centuries but renowned for its exquisite collections of carpets, Thangkas, statues and frescoes. Lamayuru has numerous man-made caves carved out of the mountainside.
During the 28th and 29th days of the 2nd Tibetan month Yundrung Kabgyad Festival is celebrated.
