Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, located in
Gwalior, was established in August 1957 as a national college of physical education.
Named after Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, this was the first institute in India to have introduced Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree courses in physical education. The university also offers M Phil and doctoral degrees in physical education. It was granted autonomous status by Jiwaji University in 1982.
