Lacquer Craft




Lacquer craft is an art work which is predominantly found in Etikoppaka in Andhra Pradesh. It is the application of lacquer on wood to create a distinctive and pleasant appeal. Etikoppaka happens to be one of the most important centers of this craft.

Evidence indicates that the practice of lacquering objects began over 4000 years ago, where it was used to coat common objects like furniture, and personal items like earrings and combs.

This art work is done on a lathe, hand or by machine. The hand-lathe is preferred for turning slender and delicate items. Lac is applied in a dry state. Designs are painted with a brush on figures, objects and toys. The lac bangles are the most popular lacquer ware found in this place. Other applications of this art work is with beads, glass, stones, mirrors and more.
