Kuruvati, also known as Muchan vati, is one of the weapons used in the northern system of
Kalaripayattu. It is a short stick, which measures to about 3 ‘Chans’ in length. One Chan is the distance between the tip of the thumb and the tip of the small finger when the thumb and the fingers are held in an outstretched position.
Kuruvati is mainly used for the fast movements and quick reflexes. Some times two sticks are used. Expert masters in their prime time can make up to 100 strikes in one minute. The strikes are aimed at the vital points of the body. This short stick training is used as a stepping stone for more sophisticated swordsmanship.
