Kurmayaee is an engagement ceremony preceding
Anand Karaj, the Sikh marriage ceremony. This ritual, also called Shagan, is usually held a day prior to the marriage. The venue is the groom’s home.
The word ‘kurmayaee’ literally means coming together or meeting of the parents of the bride and groom. As the word suggests, this ceremony is held in the presence of the parents, relatives and friends. The ceremony involves a promise for the marriage and the formal exchange of the engagement rings. Gifts are also exchanged between the families. This exchange ceremony is called milnee. These formalities are means of symbolizing the union between the two families.
