Surrounded by hills on the three sides, Kupari is one of the Buddhist archeological spots in
Orissa. The place houses the ruins of old Buddhist temples and monasteries, which are still traceable. The best preserved part of the remains are found to the west of the village. The Brahminical images, a long narrow hall surrounded by pillars, small temples of
Lord Shiva, an open hall with six monolithic laterite pillars, and a beautiful image of
Goddess Durga are worth mentioning.
Kupari is 67 km from
Baleswar and 29 km from Soro. The nearest rail junction
Bhadrak is on the
Kolkata-
Chennai railway line that also passes through
Bhubaneswar and
Cuttack.
