Kummi is a popular dance performed by the women of
Tamil Nadu. This folk dance is a major attraction during the festive season of
Pongal. It is also played during family functions such as the one celebrating puberty.
In course of performance, the participants stand in a circle and dance clapping their hands rhythmically to the songs with catching tunes. Their hand gestures signify reaping and harvesting. The first line of the song is sung by the leading woman, which the others repeat.
Many varieties namely Poonthatti Kummi, Deepa Kummi, Kulavai Kummi, Kadir Kummi and Mulaipari Kummi are famous.
