Kultali is a
taluk headquarters located on the largest island in the
Sunderbans, with over 200,000 inhabitants. Towards the north-west of this town is
Mathurapur.
Kultali island is largely undeveloped, with poor basic facilities and infrastructure. Most of the inhabitants are agricultural labourers, van pullers, daily wage labourers, fishermen, wood cutters, most of them living in poverty. Efforts are being made by various voluntary organizations, with a view to improve the lot of the villagers.
Mathurapur railway station is the nearest access point by rail. The journey to the island has to be made by ferry.
