The Kullu Dussehra is a famous festival celebrated in
Kullu District,
Himachal Pradesh. This seven-day festival begins when
Dussehra celebrations end in other parts of the country.
The festival begins on the day of Dashami, the tenth of the Ashwin month according to the Hindu calendar. It starts with the pulling of the chariot of
Lord Ram from the
Raghunathji Temple by hundreds of devotees. It is believed that the person who pulls the chariot will go to heaven after death. The procession is conducted to memorize the victory of Ram over
Ravana. The week-long Kullu Dussehra festival ends with the sacrifice of a buffalo, a rooster, a lamb, a fish and a crab.
The nights are filled with music and dancing. During these days the valley is riot of colours. A large number of people gather here.
