The Kulavai songs are special songs sung by women working in fields in
Tamil Nadu. These songs are sung mainly in
Thanjavur District. While singing these songs, special sounds are emitted by swift turning of the tongue side wards.
Kulavai songs are sung in the fields to provide entertainment and encouragement during the work. They are sometimes recited to welcome a guest in the field. The visitor is expected to gift a token amount to the women, if he is greeted by them by singing the Kulavai songs.
