Kopeshwar Temple

Situated on the banks of the Krishna River, Kopeshwar Temple is an ancient shrine in Khidrapur of Kolhapur District. An idol of Lord Vishnu and a Shivling facing north can be seen here. Built in the 11th century by Shilahar, the shrine is noted for its architectural grandeur comprising the carvings of Shivaleetamrit, old pillars, halls and exquisite sculptures of gods and goddesses in various poses. Uniqueness is that the temple stands on a semi-circular platform called Gajapeeth, which in turn rests on the back of 92 carved elephants.
