Koothanur is a small village in
Tiruvarur District of
Tamil Nadu. It is about 22 km from
Tiruvarur and around 15 km from
Mayiladuthurai.
Koothanur is famous for the ancient Saraswathi Ambal Temple, dedicated to the goddess of learning - Goddess Saraswathi. The temple is believed to have been built by the Tamil poet Ottakoothar, a contemporary of Kamban and the author of famous work Kulottunga Cholan Ula, in the 2nd millennium CE.
It is believed that the village was named after Ottakoothar. Legend has it that the place is associated with the convergence of the three rivers - Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati.
Koothanur is on the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruvarur rail route and about 2 km from Poonthottam.
