Kolar Gold Fields lie 98 km east of
Bangalore, and south of
Kolar town,
Karnataka. As an important gold mine in India, it has been producing the yellow metal for over a century. Being the world’s deepest gold mine, this mine extends up to 65 km. The productive bed is 6 km long, with an average width of about 6 km and depth of about 3 km. It was first mined in 1881 and closed in 2002.
Prior permission from Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation is required to visit this site. Visitors are permitted only on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, from October to February. Children below 10 years are not permitted.
