Koireng Tribe

Koireng is a small tribe inhabiting areas in Senapati District of Manipur.

The word Koireng is derived from 'Kol' meaning east and 'ren' meaning men. Belief is that their origin was in a ‘khur’ or cave and Pathian was their supreme God before they embraced Christianity.

Paddy, maize, sesame, potato, arum and ginger are cultivated and they trade these crops with Meiteis. Kangrai Mindai is the major festival celebrated by them, which lasts for three days, in the month of Phurpa (May-June).

High social status is given to women of the tribe. They participate in economic activities and are represented in the village council.
