Koirao Tribe inhabits areas in the Sadar hills of
Senapati District in
Manipur. They call themselves Thangal.
They are very fond of children and believe that the children are the gifts of God. Maharaja Pamheiba of Manipur (Garib niwaz) is believed to be a Thangal boy.
In earlier days, these tribes exchanged their agricultural products, baskets and black smithy with Meiteis for food, with Tangkhuls for earthen pots and with Kukis for beaded necklaces. Their main festival is Linhut tangnit or seed sowing festival, along with the Christian festivals. Katammi (village council) is controlled by the Khullakpa (village chief).
