People belonging to the
Khasi tribe of
Meghalaya use an indigenous rain shield called as Knup. Woven from bamboo splits, it contains a conical headgear with an elongated base that provides a cover for the back.
The structure consists of two layers woven in an open-hexagonal weave. Waterproofing is done by packing two layers of dry palm leaves, called ‘shlew,’ in between. The different layers are fixed to each other with bamboo pins. The edges are reinforced by sewing them with bamboo splits.
